(1980 – present)

There are three artists called Cynic.

1. Formed in Florida, United States in 1987, Cynic is a band that recorded a few demos before moving to a highly complex form of influenced / , manifested in their seminal album, 1993’s Focus, which for over a decade was the band’s only official release.

Cynic disbanded in 1994 due to artistic differences while working on their second album, but regrouped in 2007 to perform a series of shows. The reunion was successful, with the group also performing a new song, entitled Evolutionary Sleeper, a composition in the unique style of Focus. This was a harbinger of things to come, as the group recorded two additional tracks, Integral Birth and Adam’s Murmur and then signed a contract with Season of Mist for two albums. Their second album, Traced in Air, was released on November 17, 2008 in Europe and November 25, 2008 in North America.

They released Re-Traced, a collection of re-workings of songs off Traced in Air, in 2010. This album features a different style that has been described as “space science fiction prog-folk”. The album also includes the new track Wheels Within Wheels, which Cynic felt fit better on this album than Traced in Air.

Focus is truly a masterpiece. Their 2nd album is excellent, not a masterpiece like Focus. I didn't really bother getting the EP's after the 2nd album. As for the 3rd album, I've only listened to one song off it and it's cool. I gotta get the EP's I missed and then get their 3rd full-length album.

God forbid if a metal band wants to grow up and do something that's not exactly like an album they put out 20 years ago. Carbon-Based Anatomy is the best thing they've ever done, deal with it nerds.

"taking the forefront in songs that emotionally peak in a way that give them the feel of one of those “deep” Adele songs that go viral on Facebook." Chill man. Your hatred of popular culture is clearly driving your judgement and I suggest you focus less on what rustles your jimmies and focus more on what floats your boat. If people weren't so concerned with what is or isn't "metal" or whether this is "masculine enough" people could actually just accept the music for what it is. All this talk about "being disguised as" something is just bullshit. We all hear the sounds, why be so fundamentally hung up on what whoever calls it?

Traced in Air and Focus are both pretty much masterpieces, but I'm not that sure about KBtFU. It's not bad, but it's very lacking, at least compared to the quality of their work before it. Nevertheless, I'm still very much looking forward to what is next for these guys.

KBtFU is the first album I've heard from them and loved it immediately. I've grown out of growling so I doubt I'll like Focus but I'll give the others a shot.

"Well now I'm listening to Cyberly by Serdce and it's kind of like Focus" Yeah, Serdce are one of the very few bands that can pull off Cynic's early style and put their own spin on it.
