Omaha, Nebraska, United States (1995 – 1998, 1999 – present)

Cursive is an band from Omaha, Nebraska, United States. The band records for the label Saddle Creek Records and, along with Bright Eyes, is one of its flagship artists. The band was formed in 1995 by Tim Kasher, Matt Maginn, Steve Pedersen (all formerly of Slowdown Virginia), and drummer Clint Schnase. In 1997, they released Such Blinding Stars for Starving Eyes. After a few years of touring the band broke up in 1998. They posthumously released The Storms of Early Summer: Semantics of Song in the fall of that year. A year later in the summer of 1999 the band reformed. Pedersen had started law school so Ted Stevens (formerly of Lullaby for the Working Class) stepped in and joined the band. In 2000, their album, Domestica, a concept album written like a one-act play documenting the lies, hate and deceit associated with a divorce, gained them much attention from fans and critics alike and they toured with At the Drive-In.

Cursive added Gretta Cohn in 2001 on cello. The strings added complimentary sounds to that summer’s Burst and Bloom. In 2002, the band toured on the Take Action! Tour.

Saddle Creek Records released The Ugly Organ in 2003, a series of internal monologues that reflects insecurities and self-doubt amidst the turmoil of life on an ever-turning emotional carousel.

Sorry, I guess I worded that wrong - I don't hate them, they're just the songs I come back to the least. Also, Monogamy is really solid.

@MrDaniwl_UK- "Caveman" was my personal favorite from the album. :/

Mama didn't really have the depth that Kasher is capable of, I thought. It sounded excellent, but lyrically I think it's on the weaker end of the scale. Speaking of scales, you know, I think I Am Gemini just tipped the KASHER OBERST scale in my brain in favor of Tim! I had low low expectations for this album because of Mama and Monogamy so I went into it bracing for disappointment only to have my BRAIN emotionally shattered the way I could ever hope from Cursive. I love it, is what I'm saying.

Huh, I didn't know Mama was so frowned upon. With the exception of 'Caveman' and 'We're Going To Hell' I really enjoy that album. Listened to the new album a couple of times now and I think it's pretty good, some forgettable tracks...

Saying that a band's best days/sound is behind them doesn't necessarily reflect and individual's lack of ability to appreciate a band that innovates and changes its sound.

I've only listned to it twice so far and I wouldn't necessarily say that its better than Mama, I'm Swollen. They share a lot of topics (Personality issues, your inner demons, good vs. evil), I think they're quite simelar but Mama, I'm Swollen still a bit better. But then, I have listened to that one much more often, so we'll see. But its great nonetheless

Well, it's better than Mama, I'm Swollen (which isn't saying much), but I think Cursive has left their best days behind them.

ha, I kinda feel bad for you. Happy Hollow is my third favorite Cursive album. Mama is their weakest next to Blinding Star but this is just a good album. But yeah if you can only appreciate a singular form of music I guess they did change after Ugly Organ, good observation

Happy Hollow was when Cursive started to deviate from what was great about them, but they still had some great songs on that album. Mama, I'm Swollen marked their total decline in sound and songwriting. I Am Gemini is at the bottom of that pit.
