Lots of vapid opinions thrown around about which version is better in this shoutbox. Who cares?

the original is better, from a progressive standpoint: while I worship the cure, the smith version placed the climactic final post-chorus at the end of each chorus section, diminishing its ultimate emotional impact, while ultimately pandering to a pop-oriented audience. ethan's disaffected, ghastly vocals, pitch-bent and recorded without emotion, pay the perfect tribute to an overly-pedantic 80s new wave track portrayed in a postmodern light; the gradual progressive build to the final chorus is nothing short of haunting, dramatic emotional decimation. in many ways, the original version feels like a precursor to many tracks on (III): the band's shift towards a much more minimal, affected vibe is present within the original track, as well as the removal of many layers of sound in favor of a more straightforward--yet distinctive--sonic profile. either way, the original version remains as the band's best song, beating out many competitors on (III).

Can't stand the Robert Smith version, original just fits perfectly for me, especially the ending.

The original is better in my opinion. The floating, less prominent, and eerie vocals are more haunting and downbeat, and the way the song builds up to that final climax makes it more rewarding.
