Jason Trzaska and Peter Hill have been playing in Philadelphia area bands for over a decade each, that’s how they first met, but they didn’t start playing in a band together until April 2009. Jay had played in a band called US Funk Team and Pete played in one called Except After Sea. Both bands experienced minor success, had multiple releases, and toured nationally. By early 2009, US Funk Team had broken up and Except After Sea was headed into a long hiatus due to half the band moving across the country. Soon after, Jay was invited to do an acoustic show and Pete was booked as the other act that night. They had respected each other musically, but never really had any deep conversation. That night, over some beers, they realized they had many of the same musical ideas and influences. They also found out they lived very close to each other and agreed to jam soon.
The first night they jammed, they wrote a lot of music. The next time was similar and they found it not only came with ease, but was refreshingly fun. In a short time, they had over two full-lengths worth of material and knew they were onto something good. Most songs were written around a basic Casio keyboard drum beat. They made it a challenge to see if they could write a collection of songs solely off those beats.
