‘Courts make guitar music with a difference. It’s heavily influenced by jazz and hip hop creating a sound that’s certainly good enough to make use of the word ‘funky’ acceptable again… and that’s saying something.’ (BBC)
‘Grooving funk feel, which makes them even more addictive.’ (Artrocker)
‘Rhythmic funk blended with rap-esque lyrics contributing to a truly unique sound.’ (The Mahogany Blog)
Courts are a five-piece band from Basildon, Essex consisting of Chris Moody (vocals and guitar), Dan Baker (bass), Joe Choppen (drums), Luke Baker (guitar and keyboard) and Reece Baker (guitar).
Since meeting through college, the boys have been influenced by a beneficially diverse spectrum that ranges from jazz to hip-hop. The lazy journalist may pigeonhole the band as ‘indie’ but Courts are so much more than your typical guitar band. They describe what they do as ‘guitar based hip-hop influenced music’, and what makes them unique is the sound they have carefully developed over time which has had them tipped as a ‘new band to watch’ (Tom Robinson – BBC Radio 6 Introducing).
Courts live show makes for an equally energetic and boundary crossing experience as their music. Having built a solid and diverse fan base in their hometown through regular local gigs, the band have also played some of London’s best venues and nights including Barfly, The Old Queen’s Head, Notting Hill Arts Club’s Death 2 Disco, and The Queen of Hoxton’s Session.
