In the early '80s, The Pigs were a staple in the New Jersey political hardcore punk scene. They frequently gigged with proto-grindcore pioneers Cyanamid, at benefits, and with political bands touring through the NYC area. Whether or not they were playing, at least one member of the Pigs could be found at nearly every hardcore show in New Jersey and most of those in NYC from about 1980 to 1985.
The two consistent members of the band were Kevin (electric guitar) and Paul (bass). Several people sang over the Pigs 5 year lifespan and there were a few different drummers. The Pigs eventually evolved into an avant-garde post-punk project around 1984, while Kevin and the Pigs' last lead singer, Matt, were also working on Brain Vacation. Eventually, Kevin and Paul would reunite to form Chicken Scratch, with Kevin singing and playing guitar, backed up by Paul on bass and Dan on drums.
