There are at least two different artists with the name Colosseum:

1. A British band formed in 1968.

2. A band from Finland. They released three full-length albums before disbanding.

1. Colosseum is a British / band formed in 1968 by drummer Jon Hiseman, tenor sax player Dick Heckstall-Smith and bass player Tony Reeves, who had previously worked together in John Mayall’s Bluesbreakers on the Bare Wires album. Dave Greenslade, on organ, was immediately recruited, and the line-up was completed by Jim Roche on lead guitar and James Litherland on guitar and vocals. Roche only recorded one track before being dropped. British Colosseum made their live debut at the Scene Two club in Scarborough. They were later recorded by influential BBC Radio One DJ John Peel for his Top Gear Radio program. This appearance gained them valuable exposure and critical acclaim.

Colosseum’s first album, Those Who Are About To Die Salute You, was released by the Fontana label in 1969. Colosseum also played on the “Super Session” film with Jack Bruce, Roland Kirk Quartet, Eric Clapton, Stephen Stills & Buddy Guy. Colosseum’s second album, also in 1969, was Valentyne Suite, notable as the first release on the Vertigo label, who also first signed heavy metal pioneers Black Sabbath. The Vertigo label was launched by Philips to sign and develop the more ‘progressive’ artists, such as Manfred Mann Chapter lll and Ian Carr’s Nucleus, that did not fit the main Philips Records brand.

By the way, there isn't more than one Metallica, Megadeth, The Beatles, or Nickelback, because that would be illegal for copyright reasons. The British Colosseum can technically sue the Finnish one and win (not that they should).

"I'm sure they weren't even aware of their existence." For a band that formed in Finland in 2005, not doing simple google search when picking a name comes off as lazy and uncreative. Not that it matters. I just like to whine. You're taking this way too seriously Spineshank. :)

  • spineshank155 is the only one can't properly separate artists which creates confusion. Yeah there's more then one Metallica, Megadeth, The Beatles, Nickelback, ect.., why would Colosseum be any different? Like TheArtofShred88 mentioned, they are not aware of their existence, nor realize that they could do some internet searches to see if that band exists. Oh.. "And the internet is THE place for people to bicker and complain about the most ridiculous things." This isn't facebook. I will agree that does need to separate artists but you must be new to because i have been through that stage where one band is better then the other automatically because i like x band better than y. I have been noticing other bands such as Trist where people prefer the depressive one over the ambient/atmospheric one. I don't care that some suicidal dude that cuts himself & posts pics on the internet took the same name as the ambient one even if the suicidal dude is more popular.

When I'm thinking of a name for my band, internet search engines are clearly the first things that I consider.

As if they "copied" the name. I'm sure they weren't even aware of their existence. There's millions of bands out there who happen to have the same name, it's not like they were all "HEY GUYS, I LIKE THAT NAME, DO YOU?" - "YEAH" - "LETS COPY IT AND PISS EVERYONE OFF AND CREATE SEARCH ENGINE CONFUSION! FUCK YEEAH"

Copying the name of a well-known band 40 years your senior isn't exactly respectful or inviting of respect. It's also lazy, uncreative, and asking for search engine confusion. And the internet is THE place for people to bicker and complain about the most ridiculous things. Are you new here?

You know this world would be a FAR BETTER place if people respected one another, for their beliefs, tastes ect.. i don't give a rats ass what is on this page, main photo, who it's being shared with because it does not affect me in any way. If people want to complain about this being a doom metal or prog jazz-rock band take it up with to split band pages. Until then why not respect both? I have been through enough bull in my life to still see people mistreat one another or bicker and complain about the most ridiculous things, especially on the internet. Chill out.

"I really hate these talentless doom metal bands that ruin the pages for the great progressive rock acts with genuienly talented musicians." - LoL, you are such a true expert in music. Thought that fans of prog rock are smarter than that.

The classic Bitish jazz-rock band had this name taken first. Their picture should be main. Please vote it up:
