Biography

Coati Mundi is the stage name of Andy Hernandez, vibraphone player and member of Kid Creole and the Coconuts as well as Dr. Buzzard’s Original Savannah Band, with longtime collaborator August Darnell (aka Kid Creole). He scored the Top 40 UK hit “Me No Pop I” in 1981, just before the release of Tropical Gangsters.
In 1997, Coati Mundi collaborated with band leader-Ray Chew (of The Apollo)and The Black Rock Coalition Orchestra to create arrangements for a tribute and celebration of the music created by Afro-Latin Americans and its influences on both cultures during the late 60’s and early 70’s.

This tribute was called “The Afro-Latin Connection” and was held at BAM’s Majestic Theatre in Brooklyn. The show combined the talents of Vernon Reid, Corey Daye, Carl Hancock Rux, and Joe Bataan, along with many others.
