Clown Stigmata started in 2008 as a joke. Founder Christopher M. Walsh, an actor in Chicago, had three initial inspirations: First, a friend started making hilarious parodies of hip hop music using nothing but GarageBand and a cheap microphone. Second. another friend took a class in clowning, and she introduced Christopher to the term “clown stigmata. ” The moment he heard the phrase he thought, “What a great name for a band!” Then, a third friend made a joke about a sex act referred to (in Chicago, anyway) as “The Belmont Transfer,” and the first song was created. A scant few weeks later, the Clown Stigmata Demo EP was ready.
Today Clown Stigmata’s music makes less effort at being funny. Inspired by current industrial acts like Cyanotic, 16volt and the Shizit, as well as pioneers like Ministry, KMFDM and Atari Teenage Riot, Clown Stigmata is one guy’s humble attempt to carve out his own niche in the world of electronic rock music. At the same time, Clown Stigmata is still a just-for-fun enterprise. They don’t perform live, and they are not trying to make money off of it. Clown Stigmata released its third EP, Tsar Bomba, in September of 2010.
