About this album

Frontier (2012) Released: 14 Feb 2012 14 tracks (46:11)
Only Theatre of Pain was the debut studio album of American goth rock band Christian Death, originally released by Frontier Records in 1982. The album is considered the harbinger of deathrock.

All tracks after “Prayer” (on the later published CD version only) actually comprise the earlier EP, “Deathwish”. The writing of Only Theatre of Pain was vocalist Rozz Williams’ rebellion to his religious upbringing as well his own personal attacks against organized religion.

Christian Death’s appearance on the Hell Comes to Your House compilation helped to get them signed to Frontier Records, which released their debut album, Only Theatre of Pain, in March 1982. James McGearty paid for the studio.

This is one of those rare albums whose secret charms are hidden in an unconscious sonic process in the soul that needs TIME to unfold. Don't expect to get over the pretentious aspects of this record before the process I mentioned is finished. Those who persevere in listening will prevail in the end.

From this album on which the guitarist (I don't know who he is) promises more than Rozz Williams' vocals, we discover two things: 1) Goth rock inherently possesses a considerable doze of silliness, pretentiousness and melodrama, 2) (And more importantly), it doesn't matter.
