Los Angeles, United States (1979 – present)

History
Officially there have been over 30 musicians involved with the band. Therefore a historical litany of them all would be impractical.

Formed in Los Angeles and fronted by 16 year old vocalist/lyricist Rozz Williams, the band released the first album “Only Theatre Of Pain in 1982. A dark, sinister style of punk rock. The album gained local success. A year later the band completely broke up

Singer Rozz then joined the band “Pompeii 99’ founded by singer, guitarist, song writer Valor.

Rozz took over vocals leaving Valor to focus on guitar. Before Rozz joined Pompeii 99, the band had already released their fist album “Look At Yourself” to much acclaim, which had an apocalyptic theme with a punk rock flavor. The Pompeii 99 had been planning their first tour when it was proposed by their French record company, to merge Pompeii 99 into a new version of Christian Death which after some debate was agreed upon. Thus, began the new Christian Death and the first Pompeii 99 tour became the first Christian Death tour.

Part way through the tour the band stopped in Wales to record songs, some of which were originally intended for the next Pompeii 99 album. The fusion of which led to the unique sound of the classic “Catastrophe Ballet”.
Like the first Pompeii 99 album, Catastrophe Ballet had an apocalyptic theme, however the music morphed into something not quite Pompeii 99 and nothing like the first Christian Death album. After the tour the band returned to LA to later record the 3rd Christian Death album”Ashes”which was a post apocalyptic vision of a cold and bleak future.

I don't wish Valor death, but different value of CD music with or without Rozz needs to be understood by everyone who has a good musical taste.

Respect? You... and rrres... Jeeesus , my eyes, I'm blind! Ok, however, look now, dogman, I am fan of Rozz, not of his fans, which ironicaly to your words are here mostly to offend and harass this band or Valor's fans, curseing him, wish him death, and other pleasant stuff. The last thing that can be found in your words is RESPECT. Unrestingly repeating like bots hate words over and over again, yes, believe it or not, this-makes-me-vomit. "Words speak for themselves", yes, these words really do. As you said "silence should really be the choice for some people", unfortunately it's not.

"I'm a fan of Rozz" - and Rozz's fans makes you vomit, as per your tagging?I wonder why. If you want to make yourself clear, do that with respect to others, we are here to discuss the music we love, not to offend or harass each other. Although silence should really be the choice for some people, words speak for themselves, the very words that you chose, "dear".

Ha-ha, dear, I'm very far from being homophobic, so sad to disappoint you. As I already said - I'm a fan of Rozz - and didn't care about anybody's s. orientation. What i meant was clear enough. It's kind of pity that you distort it’s meaning in desired direction, so you can be able to point a finger at me. "Oh, he said the G. word! Get that homophobic mother fucker!" If you like burning crosses on a nigger's lawn, then be my guest, but not everything is in black and white. ;) P.S. Sometimes, when you don't have anything to say - silence is better solution.

"Gay shit." Ha. Proud to see that Valor's "street team" has homophobes (2nd time I read it from this user, so...).

MusicBrainz (one, two), Amazon (one, two), and even Wikipedia seem to recognize the fact at hand: there were two different bands called Christian Death. Why doesn't last.fm recognize it also? Why allow one band to select an official image to the exclusion of another band of equal popularity that shares the same page? I don't mean to give the impression that I think it's big deal; I'm just wondering where this exceptionalism is coming from.

I had a long-winded reply posted earlier, but deleted it because who cares. What I'm really wondering is: what does a legal artifact have to do with correctly documenting the music we're scrobbling? It's a fact that we have two separate bands occupying this page; Rozz continued to release new albums as Christian Death after splitting with Valor, even while Valor was simultaneously releasing albums as Christian Death. It's a fact that both of these bands are popular in their own right - just take a look at the scrobbles here. These facts remain factual even if they're deemed illegal facts later on.

did you all even glance at the link I just posted? if we can all band together in big numbers, and get last fm to allow us to choose which artist pictures we want for our own profiles, this whole forced artist/label thing will hardly matter anymore! yes, Valor's (unwanted) presence will always be flashing here on Christian Death's main page, but as long as I get to see nice Rozz pics in my library on MY personal last fm profile, I am completely satisfied. besides, the whole idea of everyone fighting over which picture gets to the top is extremely frustrating and just doesn't work one way or the other anyway.

BadBlackFlag, Tainted Love is the most listened track of Marilyn Manson on Last.Fm, but every fan knows it's not cause of the quality, but the popularity of the song. Very often the most easy to assimilate songs are at the top of the charts. And when someone new to CD comes to this page he will see nothing else than "hallelujah OTOP, fuck Valor" in the shout box, you've done good hate work there, congrats! Rozz would be so proud. :) Gosh, I used to like him so much more before i came to this hysterical page.

When I’m waiting new CD album to come out, It will be kind of weird to see Rozz on the main pic, cause since 1985 he’s out of the band willingly. Now – you can just continue with all your ‘No true Cd without Rozz” comments if it makes your day. For me Valor is the one who kept CD alive for such a long time and never gave up of it’s idea, and developed it in sо varried ways.

The “he shouldn't have carried on as Christian Death” part kind of amaze me. It’s not like you took candy from a little baby, you know. Rozz resurrected CD with the help of Valor, CD was already dead before that. They made next two albums together. Then Rozz tried to kill CD again – this child that he claimed is very special for him? Interesting, cause some years ago, in some interviews, he claims he didn’t give a shit for CD anymore, and wanted to start something different. Well, if I’m Valor and the band is planning to go on tour after the release of new CD album, and then out of a sudden this “look guys, surprise! I’m out, sha-la-la” gay shit happens, I’ll definitely keep the band’s name, cause the fans will expect nothing less than this. Since Valor is a major part of CD from the very beginning of the resurrected band, of which later Rozz gave up once again, it’s more than logical that the main pic contains image of him and the current members.

All valor vocal albums together have just 300 thousand plays. Its about a half of OToP plays. I dont give a shit how many albums he released. It's all about quality, not quantity

@EdenFeast, you should know that Rozz was also a composer in Catastrophe Ballet and Ashes. Sleepwalk and Face for instance were songs from the OTOP era - just for the record. He wrote all the lyrics as well. Valor is a vocalist since the 4th record, ok, but he even shouldn't have carried on as Christian Death in the 1st place, as Rozz asked him not to do that and he agreed to move on as Sin and Sacrifice. Gitane Demone and David Glass have gracefully provided their mea culpa in several interviews, so, it's like 3 against one. There is no math to be done. And @TheMannen, thanks for the reply, you were pretty cool, objective and straightforward.

I'll be glad if Valor never puts Rozz pic here! Not because i have something against Rozz, but because of you people, that way you will not loose your reason to live and you will still have the chance to argue about the main pic! :) P.S. Just for the record. Valor on the main pic is far more reasonable, cuz he is in the band since the second album, as a guitar player and composer, and as a vocalist since the 4th. Rozz do the vocals in the first three and the composing only in the first one.... you do the math.

Yeah, that would obviously be the best solution, from a user's point of view. But since Valor's Christian Death are the ones with the legal rights to the name, they're the ones who can (and do, obviously) use Last.fm for promotion of their music, and as such are allowed to set an official image that they believe represents them the best (and apparently they think a picture of the current band does that). It's one of these cases where the "community" aspect of Last.fm clashes with the "artist promotion tool" part.

@The Mannen: can't we just be able to choose a picture we believe represents what most listeners/Last.fm users would like to see? Valor has the legal rights for the name indeed, but he didn't actually create the name of the band - no matter how some people try to reinvent history. Rozz Williams was the founder of the band, Valor was not involved in the band's first album in ANY way (that's Only Theatre of Pain, the most listened one here), so why couldn't we be able to choose a pic from that era? Or even with Valor AND Rozz (some pics of both of them appearing together are also available for choosing, and that would split credits and glory between the 2 of them). It's only democracy, you know...
