Chris Povall has worked with sound since 2001 saw him completing composition coursework for his AS level music. Since then he has worked through University reading music and specialising in composition, and all the while strived to develop his sound and working practice. Recently, Chris has settled into writing ambient soundscapes, most recorded in one single take.
Chris’s work isn’t all about relaxing, and he creates soundscapes that are both soft and calm, and eerie and unsettling. His music is almost always very slow and introspective, minimal in melodic content and instrumentation, and made up of layers of sound. All the instruments are played by Chris himself, and almost all of the processing of the sounds in his pieces is done in real time while recording is in process. Chris works in a semi-improvisational manner, often creating a small melodic idea and thinking of where it will develop, setting a precomposed drone and occasionally precomposed textural sounds into motion, and then preparing the processes that will take place. Once this is accomplished, the recording will begin and Chris will improvise on the melody, and with the dynamics and processing of the sounds. Once recorded, very little post production is used on the music (99% of the time normalisation is all that is required), as all the panning, dynamics and processing were controlled and manipulated during recording.
