Chester Burton “Chet” Atkins (20 June 1924 – 30 June 2001) was an American guitarist and record producer. Together with Owen Bradley, Atkins created the smoother music style known as the Nashville sound, which expanded country music’s appeal to include adult pop music fans as well. His virtuoso picking style - inspired by Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, George Barnes and Les Paul - brought him admirers both within and outside the country scene. Atkins produced records for Eddy Arnold, Don Gibson, Jim Reeves, Jerry Reed, Connie Smith, and Waylon Jennings.

When I first picked up a guitar, 40-some years ago, I started looking for good players to listen to. I took a few lessons and learned something about the classical style (and literature). My second teacher's style was different -- he played a bass line with his thumb and the melody and support with his fingers. It was Atkins'-style. Atkins' arrangements don't always work for me, but his technical prowess and skill with arrangements for guitar was unparalleled -- and remains so to this day. I never got to hear him play live and that is my loss. All I have are his recordings, which has to be good enough.

he's undeniably one of the best guitarist of all time. as in ask ANY professional guitarist about chet atkins. He'd play the bass the rhythm and the melody ALL at the same time. His two hands and a gutiar made an entire band. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cyiq6lewgOk
