The Daily Star claim the lyrics are a tribute to the singer’s dancer boyfriend Derek Hough, who supported Cole through her marriage break-up with footballer Ashley Cole and subsequent battle with malaria. However, according to a source at MTV, the song was actually written before Cole fell sick with malaria. (Promise This Songfacts).

It’s a little over a year since Cheryl’s debut solo single ‘Fight for This Love’ shot to the top of the charts (knocking off her X-Factor protegé Alexandra Burke!) - since then she had a further two smash hits with ‘3 Words’ and ‘Parachute’. ‘Promise This’ is the first single to be taken from Ms Cole’s second solo album ‘Messy Little Raindrops’ – it blasted it’s way to the No.1 spot in late October 2010.
