  • 2009 in Music – What a Year

    26 Dec 2009, 14:10 by Lamprog

While it was a hard year for some in general, in terms of music this year was very interesting indeed. There were some surprising things on the way and others, not so surprising, going on. I found it easy to predict Lady GaGa's success, for example. Pop music needed someone new or at least reinventing old pop "virtues". ;) But then I didn't think I'd ever like her as much as I do now (thanks to The Fame Monster).
The biggest surprise for me was Bat for Lashes. I'd heard about Natasha and her band before but always thought they wouldn't bring anything new to my musical world. How wrong I was... And now Two Suns is one of my favorite albums this year. Sometimes change comes fast.
There were lots of new interesting things in general. It's all in my summary below. I hope your musical year 2009 was as good as mine. :)

    A personal summary

    Favorite albums of 2009

Tori Amos – Abnormally Attracted To Sin, Midwinter Graces
A Fine Frenzy – Bomb In A Birdcage
Florence + The Machine – Lungs
Marina & the Diamonds – The Crown Jewels EP and various singles
Bat for Lashes – Two Suns
Lady GaGa – The Fame Monster
The Swell Season – Strict Joy
    Charlotte Martin – Piano Trees

Plus some inofficial things like the Mad Fast Acoustic Tour Rehearsal of Charlotte Martin and Tori's live concert on Facebook.

This year's best albums are for me Two Suns and Midwinter Graces.

    Song of the year

PlayFast Horse by Tori. By far the most important song for me this year. Really mirrored some personal feelings and always was some kind of support for me.

Honorable Mentions: Just So by Obél,PlayWhen I Grow Up by Fever Ray, PlayI Am Not a Robot and PlayMowgli's Road by Marina, PlayRabbit Heart (Raise It Up) by Florence, PlayBlow Away by AFF, PlayTravelling Woman and PlayPeace Of Mind by BFL and last but not least Tori's PlaySnow Angel and PlayWinter's Carol.

    Newcomer of the year

Marina & the Diamonds. She's just beginning but next year she's gonna blow it. 2010 is Marina time! :D

  • Game: The Greatest Concert Ever

    20 Nov 2009, 21:28 by Lamprog

Take ten bands/artists that should play at your show and determine their set lists:

    - The first one plays 5 songs.
    - The second one plays 5 songs.
    - The third one plays 5 songs.
    - The fourth one plays 5 songs.
    - The fifth one plays 6 songs.
    - The sixth one plays 7 songs.
    - The seventh one plays 7 songs.
    - The eighth one plays 7 songs.
    - The ninth one plays 11 songs.
    - The tenth one plays 14 songs, with a 2 song encore.

    This is my singer-songwriter version:

    I. Marina & the Diamonds

    1. Shampain
    2. PlayI Am Not a Robot
    3. PlaySeventeen
    4. PlaySimplify
    5. Mowgli’s Road

Comment: For me, Marina would be the best opening act for a concert because she brings so much energy and enthusiasm to the stage. Plus, she is still rather new to the scene and many people would be introduced to her. This would be a full-band show, except for "Simplify", which is at its best when played solo.

  • Sea Wolf, Band of Horses & Others to Play this Saturday to Fight Children's Cancer

    19 Nov 2009, 02:31 by michaelcamacho

By Zack Behrens / Photo by Koga

It was just a few months ago when 7-year old Pablo Castelaz lost his battle with cancer, after treatment at Childrens Hospital Los Angeles. 13 months before that, he was diagnosed, almost seemingly out of nowhere showing no warning signs prior, with bilateral Wilms’ Tumor, a rare form of children’s cancer.

There's nothing fun about being in the hospital, especially as a kid. Pablo loved the the fourth floor--yes, the whole floor--where it was filled with children, games, books, art projects, entertainers (he met Lance Armstrong there). It all provides a fun getaway from chemo treatments and the such. This year the Pablove Foundation, named by his parents in memory of Pablo, is sponsoring the evening and weekend hours at the hospital's play room.

A few miles down the street in Silver Lake is Dangerbird Records, which was co-founded by Pablo's father, Jeff Castelaz. For him and his wife, Jo Ann Thrailkill, Pablo taught them that kids get cancer, too. For them, that message is a mission...

...After a series of bike ride events across the Los Angeles area on Saturday, there will be large concert-fundraiser at the Avalon. The show is big with Sea Wolf (added to the bill), Band of Horses, Tom Morello, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shirley Manson, Butch Walker, Tom Grabel (Against Me!), Jarrod Gorbel (The Honorary Title) and Charlotte Martin. And all that is $35 for general admission, all which directly benefits Pablove.

Because it's been almost two years since I filled this out...I thought it would be fun to see how this has changed.

    1. How did you get into 29? (Martina Sorbara)
My friend Christina loved her first. She has excellent taste in music, so I looked her up.

    2. What was the first song you ever heard by 22? (Clay Aiken)
Haha...umm...I guess something he sang on American Idol? I don't remember whether I watched the auditions that season or picked up the show later.

    3. What's your favorite lyric by 33? (Chris Isaak)
No idea. I don't really pay attention to his lyrics...more his music and his voice.

    4. What is your favorite album by 49? (Spice Girls)
Haha, I guess I prefer Spice World?

    5. How many albums by 13 do you own? (Mariah Carey)
    Five.

    6. What is your favorite song by 50? (Billy Joel)
First, how is Billy only #50?! That's disturbing. I love so many of his songs (so many!!), but if I have to pick just one, I always go with PlayThe Longest Time. I was so disappointed that he didn't sing it at Wrigley Field last summer.

    7. Is there a song by 39 that makes you sad? (Sarah McLachlan)
Mm, yes. PlayWintersong. It's such a beautiful type of sad, though.

    8. What is your favorite song by 15? (Andrea Bocelli)
Vivo Per Lei (con Giorgia), unless it's Olympic time. Then it's Because We Believe.

    9. What is your favorite song by 5? (Vienna Teng)
    PlayHarbor, PlayWhatever You Want, PlayAntebellum.

    10. Is there a song by 6 that makes you happy? (The Beatles)
There are probably a hundred. I mean, really, does their discography ever end? All You Need Is Love would be the most obvious.

    11. What is your favorite album by 40? (Shania Twain)
Come On Over. Seriously, weren't the majority of the songs on that album released to great success?

    12. What is your favorite song by 10? (Jack Johnson)
    PlayBetter Together!

    13. What is a good memory you have involving 30? (Laura Pausini)
I discovered her through a fantastic lady that I used to work for. She passed away a few years ago, but listening to Laura always makes me think of her.

    14. What is your favorite song by 38? (Michael Jackson)
Don't Stop Til You Get Enough. I think.

    15. Is there a song by 19 that makes you happy? (Backstreet Boys)
BSB makes me so nostalgic. Specifically, I guess I'll go with PlayAs Long As You Love Me

    16. How many times have you seen 25 live? (Madonna)
None. I'm sure that would be a great show, though!

    17. What is the first song you ever heard by 23? (Destiny's Child)
I don't know what the first song I heard would have been, but the first one that I liked was probably PlayBills, Bills, Bills.

    18. What is your favorite album by 11? (John Mayer)
    Continuum! Easily.

    19. What is your favorite song by 1? (Emm Gryner)
So far, this is the only ranking that hasn't changed since the last time I did this survey, and the answer hasn't changed either. My favourite Emm song is still Blackwinged Bird

    20. Have you ever seen 14 live? (Rascal Flatts)
No! I would love to, but I don't have any local friends who like them.

    21. What is a good memory involving 27? (Rachael Yamagata)
Her songs make me think of many fabulous road trips with Jules.

    22. What is your favorite song by 16? (Sara Bareilles)
    PlayGravity. So. Incredible.

    23. What is the first song you ever heard by 47? (Astor Piazzolla)
I have no idea. Since I'm a skating fan, PlayLibertango is a safe bet!

    24. What is your favorite album by 18? (Diana Krall)
The Girl In The Other Room

    25. What is your favorite song by 21? (Regina Spektor)
    PlayHotel Song or PlaySamson

    26. What is the first song you ever heard by 26? (Alicia Keys)
    I'm sure it was PlayFallin'

    27. What is your favorite album by 3? (Chantal Kreviazuk)
Here's another one that hasn't changed! But the answer might...the verdict is still out. What If It All Means Something has been my favourite, but her new one, Plain Jane is gaining ground. We'll see.

    28. What is you favorite song by 2? (Céline Dion)
Céline is still #2. And PlayS'il Suffisait D'Aimer is still my favourite. Although there are SO MANY.

    29. What was the first song you ever heard by 32? (Sarah Slean)
PlayMy Invitation, and I didn't really like it, so I didn't listen to her for a long time. I'm still not crazy about that song, but I do love her.

    30. What is you favorite song by 8? (Kelly Clarkson)
I can't believe she's ranked so high, first of all. I don't feel like I listen to her that often. Maybe because it takes me so many listens to decide whether or not I like her songs, haha. I guess my favourite is PlaySince U Been Gone. Does that make me shallow?

    31. How many times have you seen 17 live? (Keith Urban)
    I haven't.

    32. Is there a song by 44 that makes you happy? (Chicago)
    PlayJust You 'N' Me

    33. What is you favorite album by 12? (Superchick)
    Beauty from Pain

    34. What is the worst song by 45? (Coldplay)
I don't think there's any that make me groan.

    35. What was the first song you ever heard by 34? (Daniel Bedingfield)
    PlayJames Dean (I Wanna Know)

    36. What is your favorite album by 48? (Blue Rodeo)
I definitely haven't heard all their albums, but I have The Days in Between and I like it.

    37. How many times have you seen 42 live? (U2)
I haven't ever, although I'm sure it's a great show. I'm not sure I would shell out the cash for it, though.

    38. What is your favorite song by 36? (Bryan Adams)
    Seriously? Obviously PlaySummer Of '69

    39. What was the first song you ever heard by 28? (Jamie Cullum)
I'm going to go with These Are The Days, because that's the first track on Twentysomething. I was with a friend when she bought it and we listened to it on the way home from Windsor.

    40. What is your favorite album by 7? (Michael Bublé)
    It's Time

    41. Is there a song by 31 that makes you happy? (98 Degrees)
    I still love PlayStill.

    42. What is your favorite album by 41? (Vanessa-Mae)
    [album artist=Vanessa-Mae]The Violin Player[/track]

    43. What is your favorite song by 24? (Barenaked Ladies)
    Falling for the First Time

    44. What is a good memory you have involving 46? (Janet Jackson)
    Minneapolis!

    Welcome Home

    46. Is there a song by 9 that makes you happy? (Christina Aguilera)
PlayCome On Over (All I Want Is You)!

    47. What is your favorite album by 4? (Charlotte Martin)
    [album artist=Charlotte Martin]On Your Shore

    48. Who is a favorite member of 37? (John Legend)
I'm going to go with John Legend.

    49. What is the first song you ever heard by 43? (Frank Sinatra)
    Who knows!

    50. How many albums do you own by 20? (Maria Mena)
