@ booter08: Until the advent of vinyl around the 1940's, phonograph records were pressed from shellac compounds. This use was common until the 1950s, Shellac is scraped from the bark of the trees where the female lac bug, Laccifer (Tachardia) lacca Kerr, Order Homoptera, Family Coccidae[3]deposits it to provide a sticky hold on the trunk. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shellac
