True, schoen. I used the 'casual listener' phrase simply for the fact that Kind of Blue is one of those albums you'll find on the shelf of any music fan, jazz aficionado or not. My mother likes it. Thus a lot of folks simply call it the best because of their limited experience in this realm. Of course, that sold short the fact that it is indeed beyond brilliant, not to mention one of my personal favorites. They are in fact incredibly different records and bringing them in comparison is an effort in futility. It's simply a matter of taste when you're up at these exalted heights.

I'm not a "casual listener", but I prefer Kind of Blue to this. I like modal more than any other style of jazz, though, so it only follows that I'd opt for Kind of Blue. This is more intricate because of the orchestrations, but I think the improvisation on Kind of Blue is on a much higher level than it is here, and I find the modal theory incredibly interesting. Needless to say, both albums are essential listening, but I don't think it's fair to compare them because they take fundamentally different approaches towards performance and composition alike. Just because both are jazz albums does not mean they ought to be compared.
