(1) Chang were a noise punk band from Newport, South Wales. They were heavily influenced by noise rock bands such as The Jesus Lizard and Big Black along with hardcore punk bands such as Dead Kennedys and Black Flag.
They formed in the summer of 1999 and made their live debut in September 2000 at Newport TJ’s. The four members had been involved in various bands around the Newport area for some time such as Guinea Worm, Shaved Ape and Rhino Key. Further gigs followed with bands such as Les Savy Fav, mclusky, Pale Horse and Gonga.
Within a year of their first gig they were recieving favourable reviews from the music press. In trying to summarise their sound, comparisons were also made with experimental bands such as Dog Fashion Disco and Mr Bungle.
This generated an encouraging amount of interest from record labels but the band split in the summer of 2003 following a recording session for BBC Wales. These recordings are included in the eponymous CHANG album.
