  • This one doesn't get the attention that Unit Structures and Conquistador! get (and they themselves don't get nearly enough attention; how is it that a guy who played every bit as big a role in the development of free jazz as Ornette Coleman gets so much less attention from the public?) but it's a masterpiece on a par with nearly anything else Taylor has put out, and for a guy who has several records that can be classified as definitive works in the genre, that's saying something. Perhaps not quite as noticeably "out" as some of his other stuff, The World of Cecil Taylor gives the listener more that he can latch onto without being as firmly rooted in hard bop/post bop as albums like Jazz Advance and Looking Ahead! were. A great third or fourth record for the Taylor neophyte. "Air" is one of his definitive songs, and most CD versions of this album include at least one extra take of it (the band made 18 attempts at it!).
