This was rawer than anything Chan would go on to do, but that happens with a lot of bands. Courtney Love did the same thing between Hole's first album (raw, unpolished, dark) to their more mellow radio rock with their third album. It's the early, darker pieces of art like this though that contain a specialness to them. The artists hadn't been consumed by the industry yet, or something. It's like a testing of the waters, so it's more simple and tends have more truth to it. At least it seems that way.

this was the first one i ever got. soon after, the greatest came out and i got that and was shocked that it was the same person. i grew to love both. but i probably love this a little bit more. i was a moody 15 year old.

my tracklist is different: n°8 should be Great Expectations, n°9 is Headlights (this word is also in the song lyric, if you listen carefully)

A genius is born. After Radiohead, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Pixies, PJ Harvey, the most important artist that helped shaping the musical landscape of the Nineties, truly sublime and influential. Chan's first masterpiece.
