This was the very first vinyl album I bought. I first heard the Carpenters--ironically enough (see story about 'Mr. Guder')--at Disneyland, in the Pirates of the Caribbean restaurant, piped in singing 'Close to You'. Pestered my Dad to take me to the record store, which he obliged, liking what he'd heard as well. What a fantastic album this was and still is.

O duo dos irmãos Carpenters marcou a década de setenta com diversos hits “easy listening”, e dois dos principais singles de sua carreira estão nesse álbum, “(They Long To Be) Close To You” do mestre Burt Bacharach e Hal David e “We’ve Only Just Began” de Roger Nichols e Paul Williams. Essas faixas estão presentes entre as melhores músicas de todos os tempo escolhidas pela revista Rolling Stone. Suas músicas carregam influências do melhor da música americana com muito jazz, folk, e country, e são muito bem arranjadas pelo irmão Richard, que mostra sua alta capacidade técnica usando recursos arrojados e complexos, isso sem falar na bela voz de Karen, que com sua classe impressiona até hoje novos ouvintes. Vale a pena conferir também as belas “Baby It’s You”, “I’ll Never Fall In Love Again” e magnífica “Crescent Noon”. Pra quem conhece a dupla somente por compilações, não sabe o quanto ainda tem por descobrir em belas peças escondidas em seus álbuns.

I've got this album in a couple formats; vinyl and cassette. I bought the record in a local second hand shop, and a cassette for my old car, which I played to death, and drove my boyfriend crazy with. ;D
