I'm not a specialist on Latin music, but from what I know about Carmen she was an admirable pioneer. Sure, Hollywood typecast her and she became a bit of a joke with those extraordinary hats, which I think had a genuine Brazilian origin. This particular song is trivial, but you can tell she is totally on top of the technical challenge. There was a good BBC4 television biography of her.
