I'm excited about Sun Zoom Spark, but I've heard all of the unreleased tracks many times, as they've been circulating on bootlegs forever. It'll be great to own LMDOB on CD, though! I've owned it on vinyl for ages, but it'll be good to also have it on CD.

Hell yes, very excited about that! I would love to own Lick My Decals separately as well. But because of the outtakes/new songs and we finally get Decals on CD, i think it's totally worth it.

Anyone excited about this? - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Sun-Zoom-Spark-1970-1972/dp/B00N4FAVCA/ref=sr_1_sc_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1415735113&sr=8-1-spell&keywords=sun+soom+spark+box+set I was sceptical initially in that I thought that it was just a way of being duped into paying more for a CD reissue of Lick My Decals (an album I would adore to own, instead of having the mp3s). It pissed me off that they couldn't just package it separately. I wouldn't want to fork money for reissues of Spotlight Kid/Clear Spot, either. The outtakes look REALLY alluring, though. Check out this previously unreleased song. It's probably the first time I've heard a Beefheart track for the first time since the age of fifteen! - http://dangerousminds.net/comments/amazing_unreleased_captain_beefheart (scroll down)

I agree with Mampato that I find Ice Cream for Crow slightly filler-ish. I mean, by anyone else's standards the album is outstanding, but I find it slightly disappointing by Beefheart standards. I prefer the two preceding albums as far as the late-period stuff goes. I do not believe there's any filler on Trout Mask Replica at all, and Hair Pie is an essential part of the puzzle. The Zappa anti-production is one of those situations where we can never really know if the album could have sounded even better with a more produced sound, but I'd think it's unlikely it would have sounded quite so special any other way than it is. And I find that Don's primitive and primal sax playing is perfect for the album; the sax at the end of Ant Man Bee is one of the highlights of the whole album -- I can't imagine it not being there. And nostalgia-rush -- people like you are so fucking pointless. You are unoriginal and insecure.

Whether it's the hipster thing to do or not is really irrelevant. It doesn't change the fact that Beefheart will always be one of the greatest music groups of all time.

And some people fallaciously think that this music is gimmicky and trendy. That could not be further from the truth - it has more substance than practically all other rock music. It is a shame to encounter so much shallow contrarianism on this website.

it's perfectly valid to love it because it's weird, and I don't think beefheart ever loses his weirdness

    February 2014
  • rhayader18

v it gets much much weirder than this (try Stockhausen, Royal Trux, Metal Machine Trio, Varese, etc) but it's all only weird as long as you don't understand it. The weirdest thing is to love something just because it's too weird for you.

Bake 2, for me, is one of the album's highlights. I just think that Don's decision to play sax on the album was a mistake to begin with. What I DO like about the track is that you get a case study recording of what it was like to live in the house. That's the kind of production I think Zappa was vying for in the album.

    February 2014
  • rhayader18

No disrespect intended for TMR by the way, as it's one of the 100 best rock albums I've ever heard. Lick My Decals Off, Baby ranks as the second (sometimes first) greatest rock album of all time for me, and I think it's ridiculously underrated. I can't think of a single second of non-awesomeness in that album.

    February 2014
  • rhayader18

Hair Pie: Bake 1 has always been one of my favorites, but I don't care much for Bake 2. I agree with Mampato, Don's vocals aren't always in synch with the magnificent instrumental activity of the songs, which is a shame because both are wonderful. I prefer some instrumental versions on Grow Fins because there I get to hear every awesome musical detail and because the production of some songs is better on Grow Fins. The Blimp, Hobo Chang Ba and Wild Life aren't on par with the rest of the album IMO, the album's production isn't good enough for the amazing material at all, and although TMR hundreds of great ideas and performances, there are very few insignificant bits here and there, and not ALL of the 28 songs are masterpieces. I think TMR is Captain's most daring and uncompromising album, but that doesn't necessarily make it his best... that was pretty much EVERY complaint I've ever had about TMR :D btw, it's so great to see people who actively listen to TMR discuss it in detail.

"The only track I would consider to be filler would be Hair Pie: Bake 1."Oh, I really don't agree with you. Hair Pie: Bake 1 is an all time classic and probably among my five Trout Mask favourites, or something like that. It's briliant in every way, especially when the guitar comes in. I don't really think TMR has any filler, but there are a couple of songs that I don't love in the same way as I love the rest of the album. They still have their place though, and I wouldn't want to be without them.
