Julian Edwin “Cannonball” Adderley (15 September 1928 - 8 August 1975), originally from Tampa, Florida, was a jazz alto saxophonist, playing with Miles Davis and other greats, and leading his own band (which included his brother Nat Adderley) - the Cannonball Adderley Quintet (which was occasionally a sextet - being called “The Cannonball Adderley Quintet Plus”). He was also a high school band director at Dillard High School in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for some years.
The name ‘Canonball’ is supposed to have originated from his being nicknamed ‘cannibal’ in his youth, on account of his prodigious eating.

I lost this album years ago. so good to hear again. Miles and Adderley. Early miles so charismatic, light but punctuated next to Adderley's incredible sliding sound. briliant. Adderly sounds so fresh and inventive, holding in and then letting it come out like waves.

2009 marks the 50th Anniversary of the original release date of Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue. Legendary jazz drummer, Jimmy Cobb (the only surviving member from the original recording) leads a contemporary all-star band featuring Wallace Roney (trumpet), Javon Jackson (tenor saxophone), Vincent Herring (alto saxophone), Larry Willis (piano), and Buster Williams (bass.) The group will perform their interpretations of Kind of Blue’s five masterpieces: “So What”, “Freddie Freeloader”, “Blue In Green”, “All Blues”, and “Flamenco Sketches” plus other classics by Davis, John Coltrane, Julian “Cannonball” Adderley, and original compositions inspired by this era.
