In 2007, Calling Out West entered the heavily populated screamo scene of Denver with the counter of an alternative-indie sound. Formed in the summer by Max Comer and brothers Cody and Jake Vinton, the original lineup featured Jake on drums and vocals, Cody on bass, and Max on guitar. The three set out with a goal of playing for as many people and places as they possibly could. Originally under the name The Side Project, the three released their first EP and began to play shows, working on the development of a loyal following. After a few busy months in 2008, the band found themselves adding a new member, keyboardist Eric Roy, to the lineup. Calling Out West began playing shows with acts such as 1997, We Shot the Moon, and National Product in venues all across Denver, Colorado Springs, and Boulder. Their second EP was finalized in November, and the band began undergoing some major changes. In March of 2009, the band added Mike Anderson to take over the lead guitar, while Max adapted his guitaring to fit that of rhythm. Soon after, Eric Roy left to pursue education, and Zach Armijo was added as the full-time drummer while Jake advanced to front man. The official name of the band was changed to Calling Out West in June of 2009.
