Cake For Lily is the brainchild of Kieran Binnie, and is a blend of Americana and English folk. Influences include Ryan Adams, Whiskeytown, Gram Parsons, and Eliza Carty. Binnie’s musical career began as a classically trained violinist, and he did not actually pick up a guitar until the age of sixteen. His orchestral past stood him in good stead, however, in developing the unique sound of Cake For Lily. As well as writing both the lyrics and the music, Binnie plays acoustic, electric and lap steel guitar, mandolin, violin, and hammond organ on Cake For Lily’s first EP, The Boy With Pomegranates In His Eye.
Vocals are provided by Jon Gibbins, who Binnie met at the University of York. Their creative collaboration began in 2005. The EP was recorded in York, enlisting a host of local musicians including classical singer Phillipa Thomas, percussionist Ashley Ward, and a string quartet.
