“Pepper” is a song by American band Butthole Surfers. It appeared on their 1996 album Electriclarryland, and reached number one on Billboard’s Modern Rock Tracks chart.

The song shifts from rap-like verses to sung choruses. The lyrics of the verses list ten characters and describes how each either dies or escapes a brush with death. The Incidents, whether brought about by idiotic recklessness or meaningless bad luck, finds the victim romanced or invigorated by facing death. The lyrics of the chorus mention vivid sense memories of close physical human contact, but center on moments painful self-consciousness when one looks back and realizes that one’s self-image at the time was not being shared. The relationship between the lyrics and title is not made clear, nor is the exact connection between the different types of peeked awareness presented in the different sections.

Songfacts says: “Tricky ear-candy here includes an electric bass being played with a bow and a portion of the chorus being played backwards. There’s also a stark contrast between the rapped verses in a distorted voice and the chorus opening up louder and flashier with each refrain.”

used to listen to it as a kid, still gets caught in my head occasionally. Not as good as older butthole surfers, but a worthwhile song nontheless.

More of a pop sound than I care for in my butthole, but still, I can't find a single thing about this tune that isn't awesome.

This really does bring back memories of my childhood of taking long drives with my dad and this song would come on the radio. This song plus trees and cars flying by go pretty well with this song.

Not quite Sweetloaf... almost sounds like UK Shoegazing ca 1992 mixed with early Eels. What is gibby doing now?
