Born in cleveland in 1919, Benjamin Clarence Jackson learned to play saxophone at school where he also started his first band, The Harlem Hotshots.

Jackson joined the Lucky Millinder Orchestra, where he was given a chance to sing when their regular singer failed to turn up for a show.
