Murtuza Mammadov (1897-1961) was one of ’s most famous opera singers. He was given the nickname “Bul-Bul” from the Azeri word for “nightingale”, which is considered the sweetest of all bird songsters.

He was a great singer (lyrical-dramatic tenor) and a teacher. He received his education at the Azerbaijan State Conservatoire (1921-1927) and in Italy (1927-1931).

He synthesized the best traditions of the profession of the folklore singing of Azerbaijan and Russian and European schools of singing. He took part in operas such as “Aleko”, “Toska”, “Rigoletto” and “koroghlu”.
