This album is named after a members-only club that was opened in Havana in pre-Castro times, a period of unbelievable musical activity in Cuba. While bandleader Desi Arnaz became a huge hit in the States, several equally talented musicians never saw success outside their native country, and have had nothing but their music to sustain them during the Castro reign.     Great album, but I've just come across an academic account of its creation which slightly plays down Cooder's role. The argument this that an Afro-Cuban bandleader Juan de Marcos González actually put the idea together which Cooder could capitalise on when a slightly different Cuban project failed. There's also the suggestion that the stars were not quite as washed-up as legend would have it. Whatever, Cooder was the key to getting these artists the world recognition they would not otherwise have got.
