"I built that Challenger by myself but needed money one day and so I sold it, lived a secret life I shoulda kept to myself but I got drunk one night and I told it" ... some of the saddest lines he has ever written imo.
I got a little job down in Darlington but some nights I don't go, some nights I go to the drive-in or some nights I stay home. I followed that dream just like those guys do way up on the screen and I drove a Challenger down Route 9 through the dead ends and all the bad scenes, and when the promise was broken, I cashed in a few of my own dreams.
Part of me wishes they would have released the original full band version on 18 Tracks, because I think that version is the best, but the rerecorded solo piano version is so beautiful and heartbreaking that I can't really complain about it.
I just got shivers listening to this. Now I'm listening to Bruce's version of 'Chimes of Freedom' and I'm even getting shivers reading these comments. I can't wait for the version of the song about to be released, although I doubt it'll come close. Because nothing comes close. Simply a masterpiece.
