Biography

Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England

“Paul Bruce Dickinson” (born August 7, 1958 in Worksop, Nottinghamshire, England) is a British singer, airline pilot, radio show host, fencer and songwriter, best-known as the lead singer in the iconic heavy metal band Iron Maiden. According to All Music Guide, Dickinson ‘was the most acclaimed and instantly recognizable vocalist to emerge from the New Wave of British Heavy Metal movement of the early-’80s’.

Before Iron Maiden, he was the singer in a similar band called Samson from 1979 until he joined Iron Maiden two years later in 1981. In Samson and previous bands, he went by the name of ‘Bruce Bruce’. He made his recording debut with Iron Maiden on their “Number of the Beast” album in 1982.

Dickinson quit Iron Maiden in 1993 in order to pursue his solo career and was replaced by Blaze Bayley, who had previously been the lead singer of the metal band Wolfsbane. Dickinson’s solo work ranges from the Alternative Rock sound of 1996’s Skunkworks, to the all out Metal style of Accident of Birth. Dickinson was releasing an artistic energy he felt was suppressed by Iron Maiden’s strict progressive metal format, which he claimed could not accommodate emotional reflection as evidenced in the lyrics of ‘Tears of the Dragon.’ After releasing two traditional metal albums with former Maiden guitarist Adrian Smith (which were arguably more akin to the genre than Maiden’s epic format), Dickinson rejoined the band in 1999 along with Smith.

Dear Neue_regel_ I do hope you are not saying Dickinson is not in the top 15 vocalist...I would strap myself into an Iron Maiden if that is the case. One thing ...ALL OF .Brave New World & some of Dance with Death is great, I will agree & say that their departure from moe of the galloping metal (i.e Trooper, Number of the Beast, Wasted Years, Powerslave..Fear of the Dark...etc. hints that they are trying to find a new, more current style. I do think 3 guitarists is overkill, and makes them sound Dirgish...like old Black Sabbath. Too many micro solo's thrown in. Bruce, Nicko & Steve though....THERE ARE NONE Better (Lars Ulrich is tied with McBrain - another conversation & Geddy Lee is #2 to Harris). Splitting hairs though. They NEED a stron Number of the Beast 0r Piece of Mind styled album to catapult them, and unfortunately, cut Gers.

Thank GOD Blaze 'Blazeless' is gone.....HORRIBLE....HORRIBLE...HORRIBLE. The true sadness of that short & horrible era is, Iron Maiden musically created two VERY, VERY good albums. He ruined the songs with that horrid voice of his. Bruce, Steve, Adrian & Nicko ARE IRON MAIDEN. I like Gers...Also God Rest Clive Burr...A fantastic Drummer (Heavily Influenced by John Bonham).

I have seen this man 16 times. I AGREE with all...THE BEST VOCALIST (Geoff Tate, Halford & Ronnie Dio - Rest in Peace, come fairly close, but do not come within the same league). I met the man once, Post Concert in New Haven, CT USA. VERY intelligent, and what is the most refreshing aspect of Bruce, Steve Harris & Maiden in specific, they enjoyed UNPRECEDENTED success with VERY, VERY little radio airplay, and the fact that their music was not based on the typical 80's juvenile metal (Exceptions, Dio, Priest, Qeensryche), THEY DID NOT sell records based on sex, drugs & garbage lyrically....they are intelligent. They may have let thier songs run on too long at times, but they are the best of the best. Of note, Dickinson's voice has gotten BETTER with age, unlike Geoff Tate & Dio (R.I.P) Again... with 80's metal now dominating certain rock stations (Our genre - sucks getting old) - STILL MAIDEN RECEIVES VIRTUALLY ZERO AIRPLAY. . Yes, Bruce is the God of Metal
