(VITALLY, BROKENJARAFINGERS SOUNDS NOTHING LIKE THE 'THAT'S ENTERTAINMENT' BIG BAND 'SIMILAR ARTISTS' GIVEN ON HIS LAST FM PAGE - APART FROM PHIL OCHS AND ANDRE BARLOW - BUT INSTEAD, IN MANY SONG MOODS, A LITTLE LIKE LEONARD COHEN, HARRY CHAPIN, DON McLEAN, BOB DYLAN, RANDY NEWMAN, RALPH McTELL, JAMES McMURTRY, EVAN GREER, DAVID ACKLES AND ELVIS COSTELLO MUSICALLY AND LYRICALLY; AND PETE ATKIN AND CLIVE JAMES, JONI MITCHELL, AL STEWART, MOMUS AND CATMAN COHEN LYRICALLY
BrokenJaraFingers is an artist - and especially lyricist - of three parts.
In one mode, he functions as a modern protest singer in the vein of James McMurtrey and Evan Greer, though lyrically he harks back more to the days of Phil Ochs and Bob Dylan (Epiphany, a surreal waltz about the so-called War On Terror; The Stars Look Down, about the on-going saga of Guantanamo Bay; Penury, a song about the credit crisis written 15 years before it happened).
In another mode, he is the rhapsodic balladeer of Impale Me On Your Beauty, which owes much to Leonard Cohen, his favourite artist and lyricist, in terms of mood and word. In yet another, he is even more of a spiritual excavator, with the as yet unrecorded Armageddon Love Songs trilogy and the Don McLean influenced I'm The Man Who Runs The Fair.
