I was fairly adamant about not doing a Best of the Decade list, songs or albums, until just a couple of days ago. The project just seemed like to big of an undertaking; there are always going to be gems that you find out about late, and I didn't want a decade spanning list to be just a reflection of what I was into the month I made it. I've come around though, realizing that all I needed were some parameters. Some light genre separation, a 24 hour window to think of songs and order, and best efforts not to repeat an artist (rule broken only twice) have resulted in the following. If I did this last week could there have been 50% different songs? If I did this a week later would there be 100% different rankings? Of course. So enjoy with a grain of salt, and consider that the track I listened to the most this decade is from 1991 before judging my selections too harshly.

5. Björk - Pagan Poetry. This standout track from the stunning Vespertine sounds as daring now as it did in 2001. The track is brutally cold, yet somehow "warm" sounding at the same time.
4. The Knife - The Captain. The best song on the decade's best record. Three minutes of ambiet wooshing to set the stage Karin's most disturbed vocal performance of her career and impecable pacing result in tension like I'd never heard before.
3. Fuck Buttons - Sweet Love for Planet Earth. It's the ugliest pretty song I know. It may be ten minutes of mostly feedback, but I find a new layer with every listen.
2. M83 - Run Into Flowers. Now synth heroes, back in 2004 M83 was building their shoegaze cred with supremely gradifying compositions, this being their best.
1. The Knife - Heartbeats. How the hell could a self-released track from a masked brother-sister duo from the Swedish wilderness become an ubiquitous crossover sensation? By being dead perfect.

3. Converge - Jane Doe. This 11 minute epic was Converge's first full jump into doom, solitifying the album of it's namesake as a classic and laying the groudwork for the band's following decade defining releases.
2. The Dillinger Escape Plan - Phone Home. I just love the perfect blend of classic Dillinger madness with industrial influenced control and hooks. Haters be damned: I'm not afraid of a chorus, so why should DEP have to be?
1. Jesu - Silver. This is actually a fairly simple song, but Justin Broadrick turns a few harpsi chord notes and swirling distortion into the "biggest" sounding track I know. The result of his overt discretion is a beautiful mountain to climb. Silver's just another gold indeed.

4. Lil' Wayne - Sky is the Limit. Wayne's best work has always been on his mixtapes, and he's never sounded more dangerous and unleashed as on this cut. (I've got my 40 cal tucked in my PRPs. What do you expect, I'm from New Orleans?)
3. M.I.A. - Bucky Done Gun. A few years before M.I.A. was a Pineapple Express pin-up, she was busy mashing beats from foreign slums and becoming the critical darling that was too weird for mainsteam rap fans. Hipster douchebags to the rescue!

2. Ghostface Killah - Shakey Dog. If anyone doubts Ghostface as simply the BEST narrative rapper in the world, they clearly haven't heard a verse from Fishscale.

3. Songs: Ohia: Just Be Simple. Jason Molina has written hundreds of introspective downers, (see # 10), and this happens to be his finest. I just love the old timey feel of the pedal steel throughout the track. ("And everything you hated me for, honey there was so much more, I just didn't get busted.")
2. Smog - Let Me See the Colts. Bill Callahan's ode to the male ego's need for "freedom" as defined by open spaces makes me want to move back to the mountain time zone.
1. Steve Earle - Over Yonder (Jonathan's Song). No one, and I mean no one (sorry Cash), does first-person death row songs like Steve Earle. Earle has become the face of the anti-death penalty movement, and his artistic contribution to that cause is more valuable than any check he could sign. "You can give my radio to Johnson, Tibideau can have my fan. Send my Bible home to Mama, and call her every now and then."

5. The Strokes - Hard to Explain. With one 30 minute record the Strokes put rock back on top of the heap. Dirty long hair, leather jackets, tight jeans, and groove after groove. It's a simple formula for eternal coolness that is perfectly summed up here.

4. Battles - Atlas. A thumping, tom heavy drum beat, nearly Dillinger-worthy riffing, and vocals modulated to the point of robotics, all meet here for to create the most head-scratching, ballsy opening single of the decade.

3. Sigur Rós - Hoppipolla. I love transition albums and songs (note my recent obsession with The Unforgettable Fire). For some reason it's just as interesting to hear how a band got from point A to point B than listening to either of those points. Sigur Ros needed a bridge between their thundering epics like Untitled #8 and their pop ambitions. The joyus "Hippipolla", and most of the underrated Takk record, prove that sometimes it is indeed about the journey.

2. Band of Horses - The Funeral. I've always been a total sucker for an anthem, and these lists are no exception. There was no better song this decade to crank in the car, sing along with at a live show, or recommend to a friend looking for something new, but still safe. BoH struck gold with this track, with even the most casual of music fans being able to find an emotional connection with Ben Bridwell's Neil Young-esque vocal performance and the eventual release of the chorus. The quiet/loud dynamic is used perfectly, as a means to highlight the rawness of the topic. All of the songs here could eventually become classics in their own right, but "The Funeral" is the only one that was a song for the ages from it's first spin.

1. Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Maps. The difficulty of long-distance relationships is a topic that everyone has experience with and an awareness of its pitfalls. But this is the song that taps into the feeling of why we continue to jump into them willingly; that feeling that you can beat space, that you can beat separation and show all your friends that you weren't delusional about the future. "Maps, wait, they don't love you like I love you." That line alone explains the fight of distance as clearly and honestly as any novel could. Karen O shouts "I'll stay the same!" at the top of her lungs as the song approaches its apex, signaling that she'll hold up her end of the bargain, even though she knows it's doomed onset ("don't stray . . ."). The final scene of Annie Hall finally has its musical counterpart. Why do we put ourselves through all this? Because . . . well just because we have to try.
