Biography

Broken Hearts on Ice is the solo music project of Andrew Grathwohl (November 16, 1989), a composer, producer, engineer, and programmer, of sound. He was born in New York City, though currently studies at the Jacobs School of Music. While Grathwohl’s music originally focused on experimental compositional forms, aleatory, and improvisation, he has most recently begun exploring the electronic sound world. His electro-acoustic music was most recently featured in his EP release, Ruination - a string suite in four movements for violin, two cellos, and computer. Grathwohl’s computer music is entirely derived from his collection of self-programmed computer music applications and synthesis libraries, developed with a combination of the SuperCollider and Perl programming languages.

Grathwohl’s compositions often reflect his interests in rational egoism, language barriers, conventional wisdom, population trends, and urban life. He classifies himself as a proponent of romanticism.

He is presently working on two large-scale multimedia projects, and is also a permanent member of Officer Deaf - an electronic improvisation trio - and CPU/GOD - an experimental acid house music duo with Ben Glawe of Pantree Owl. His latest solo endeavors have been heavily influenced by dubstep, in addition to his continuing interests in generative composition and his self-developed “sonic multiplicity” sound concepts.

'Adama (single)' just popped up on my Last.fm recommendations radio thing after pretty much nothing but sh-tty hip-hop and 'indie' poprock (who knows why this is all I get recommended?)... I LOVE IT!!! For a minute I thought it was Amadou et Mariam or someone like this... This is a compliment!
