Biography

British Whale is Justin Hawkins from The Darkness’ solo project. They’ve released two singles, the Multi-format This Town Ain’t Big Enough For Both Of Us (note lack of The in the Title) A cover of Sparks 1974 #2 Hit. Backed up with B-Side America, regarded by many as the better track, it landed in the UK singles chart at #6. Second single, released just before the 2006 World Cup, was the download-only England. Which featured the German national anthem in the chorus, and controversial lyrics (We fought them on the beaches/Now we’ll play them on the field).

An album of original material has already been recorded and is expected to be released in the summer of 2006, potential titles included Pretentious, Moi? and Wurst Case Scenario. But Hawkins confirmed that it is to be called Snatching Defeat From The Jaws Of Victory during an interview with MTV Germany at the Rock Am Ring festival, where he was playing with The Darkness.

Hawkins hasn’t currently played any live dates as British Whale, but has hinted that brother Dan would play guitar when he eventually gets out on the road.

Justin should record an album of Sparks covers; it would be marvellous.

British Whale = Sparks! Sparks folks, Justin is sort of brilliant, brilliant enough to bring the kids 20 year old SPARKS!!! Not to mention Darkness = Queen Judas Priest. But who needs originality?
