Brave Saint Saturn is an American rock band started as a side project by members of Five Iron Frenzy, a now-defunct Christian ska band. Described by the band as “astro-rock,” the music of Brave Saint Saturn (often abbreviated to BS2) is generally more serious than the lighthearted FIF. The group was originally an outlet for Five Iron’s frontman, Reese Roper, to explore themes of loneliness and abandonment. BS2 also experimented with more melancholy song composition and ambient sounds, with instruments like synthesizer, glockenspiel, accordion, strings and electronic sampling rounding out the simple, guitar-driven music.

The band’s trilogy of albums follow the same outer space-themed story that uses space exploration as an extended metaphor, making the three records an extended concept album. The first album, So Far from Home, was about being lost, while their second, The Light of Things Hoped For, focused on being found. Their third album, entitled Anti-Meridian, about returning home, was released on September 15th, 2008, completing the trilogy and the story of the crew of the U.S.S. Gloria.

I love the wall-of-sound, noisier sound of AM. The instrumentation is very different from their other stuff and actually much more in step with my taste. This is definitely my favorite in the trilogy, and I'm daring to say that only 5 songs into it. I think the rest will prove itself as well.

AM was so much more of a layered album than I'd anticipated... a great album, but I'm gonna have to take some time to warm up to it.

I'm a latecomer to the BSS fanclub. Ordered SFFH a few weeks ago and it's nice but ok. Just got the second one and it's much better... lots of very likeable songs and I anticipate playing it a lot in the next weeks. I'll be ordering AM pretty soon here.

Listening to it for the first time now. My preordered copy is signed saying "Sorry we are stupid." LOL

How can you rate AM as weaker than SFFH? SFFH is choc full of lame cheesiness...it's still ok, but I really struggle to take it seriously. TLOTHF and AM are light years ahead of SFFH in terms of maturity and overall quality.

I've listened to Anti-Meridian almost nonstop since I got it. Definitely seems like the weakest in the trilogy, to me, but still pretty nice. Begin Again is absolutely amazing, and I'm liking These Frail Hands and Inuictus better the more I hear them. Underground is pretty fun, too. I cringe at the inimitable Reese Roper cheesiness of Blessed Are the Landmines, but I just view that as part of the experience! Plus, it took so long for them to get my pre-ordered cd to me that Reese autographed it right under a note that says "Sorry we are slow." Thrilling! =D

Yeah, the Anti-Meridian is definitely a good album. Way different from their other stuff, and admittedly cheesy at times, but not to the point where it's not likable. And there are some REALLY good tracks on there (Starling, Blessed Are The Land Mines, Invictus, These Frail Hands). Overall, I heartily recommend it. You just can't go wrong with a BSS album if you ask me.
