Yep its an old negro work song. Chain gang by the sound. The song is made by the pick ax. It operates as an instrument and the sound of voices is celebrated here amazingly. I feel the chain keeping tempo for them all.

This amazing worksong gets me right in the heart and always will, even a decade and a half since first hearing it. Mr. Marsalis structured it perfectly to capture every important facet and show how these songs pushed power through people forced to give up their own personal power.
