At some time around 1981, some of the people who were eventually to form Camper Van Beethoven, including Chris Molla and David Lowery, were in a Santa Cruz band called Box O’ Laffs, who released exactly one album entitled “Dogbook”, cassette only on the now-defunct label Warpt West Records. At various times Campers David Lowery, Chris Molla, Chris Pedersen, Anthony Guess and Richie West were all members of Box O’ Laffs. The band continued until about 1988, although by 1984 Lowery, Hart, Molla, Guess and Pedersen were no longer involved, having formed Camper Van Beethoven.

The members at the time of “Dogbook” were:

Eric Curkendall (vocalist),
David Lowery (bass),
Chris Hart (guitar),
Chris Molla (keyboard, guitar and percussion) and
Anthony Guess/Chris Pederson/Spencer/Greg Slater (drummers at different times).

The Music
Dogbook was a bunch of live recordings put out on a tape by Warpt West records in 1985. They were mastered on cassette.

Eric Curkendall has made it known that he intends to release some more Box o’Laffs stuff in the future, some of which will be from the period after David & others left to form Camper Van Beethoven.

Noisemoustache was the project of Eric Curkendall and Anatol Sucher, an artist who owns Lost Voice Records and has worked with Jonathan Segel in the past. The tape Fake Karaoke contains five new songs plus four remixes.

Since Box O’Laffs
David Lowery, Chris Molla and Chris Pederson went on to become long-time members of Camper Van Beethoven, and Chris Hart and Anthony Guess also featured in the early CVB line-up. David later went on to form Cracker, whereas Chris Molla played in Lula Miss, and then became a music teacher and began producing music for children.

These guys were great. I miss all of the Warpt Records West bands, most of all Barnacle Choir.
