Tokyo, Japan (1992 – present)

There are several artists using this name:
1) Boris (ボリス) are a Japanese band formed in Tokyo in 1992. The band’s original lineup consisted of Atsuo, Takeshi, Wata, and Nagata who was the band’s original drummer. After his departure in 1996, Atsuo took over drums and the lineup has remained consistent to this day. Boris draw influence from a huge variety of styles including, but not limited to, , , , , , , , , and . The band’s name is taken from a song on Melvins’ album, Bullhead.

They released their debut full-length album, Absolutego, on their own label, Fangs Anal Satan, in 1996. Since its formation, Boris have released 19 full-length albums, four live albums, six collaborations with Japanese legend Merzbow among various other collaborations, and one best album Variations which focused more on the rock side of the band.

Boris saw a huge increase in popularity when Southern Lord reissued their works in North America, garnering them critical acclaim and recognition in music press. Pink, originally released in 2005 in Japan via Diwphalanx, was reissued in 2006 by Southern Lord and met with a very positive reception in the US. Blender magazine and SPIN magazine both named it one of the year’s best albums. The album also made the top of the metal section in Canadian magazine Exclaim’s reader’s poll of that year, and was in the top 10 of Pitchfork Media’s top 50 records of the year.

I've never heard that but it's pretty laughable.

I die a little inside every time I hear someone say that Wata can't play guitar.

Ah, thanks for that. You probably know that the Sydney venue used to have a bigger space in the band room, when it was the Sando.

the Casbah in San Diego is probably a bit bigger than the venue they played in Sydney (having been to both venues myself). one of the tracks they didn't play on the second nite was Cosmos.

They sold the fuzz pedal At Friday's show too. Yeah, the venue was a little bit like that. Aside from the small stage, I could feel my body almost vibrating during some of the set haha. We got Rainbow and Farewell this time possibly in place of some tracks from Noise. Vomitself was the perfect outro again, but I swear I heard something on Thursday (during soundcheck I guess) that sounded suspiciously like riffs from "Huge".

nice, the place they play down in san diego is a small joint too you can literally feel the amps pushing air, they sold out of the fuzz pedal the moment they set up the merch table too, sadly for me i dont have 300 bucks lying around either tho lol

Sydney night one's setlist looks to have been the same as Brisbane. Wonder if we'll get a different set tonight. I saw the NNL CD's and False Demon shirt. Buying them at the shows looks to have been the same as it cost when I ordered them from inoxia (including shipping). They're still selling Boris performing "Flood". I'd have imagined it selling out by now, unless they did another run, They had one fuzz pedal at the merch desk, but it was gone by the end of the night. Conservative setlist or not, they killed it. Vomitself was worth the price of admission. Side note, the venue they played at was possibly the smallest I've seen them in yet. There was virtually no separation between Boris and the crowd. One of the support band's members (maybe more than one) looked like he was standing crowd level on the floor as there wasn't enough room on stage. That or Atsuo's drum setup takes up a lot of room.

Yeah it's the same setlist from their North American tour last year.

The setlist from Brisbane looks rather "conservative" not including any NNL material. Wata's pedals are sold out already, though.

Just got my CDs in the mail. The album art is quite different from what is shown online. The colors are different and there's an image of what appears to be Wata's head photoshopped on a little girls body. It's pretty cool though.
