Biography
Bobby Joe Ebola and the Children MacNuggits were a two-piece punk rock band formed in Pinole, California in 1994. The band consisted of Corbett Redford on vocals, Dan Abbott on acoustic guitar and vocals, John Mink on vocals, and several guests on studio recordings.
The music of Bobby Joe Ebola is folk, but definitely punk rock at heart. Live shows often consisted of no amplified instruments or accompaniment, just Redford and Abbott on guitar. The songs often deal with bizarre subject matter, and feature awkward wording and border on dada.
From inception, the band were rejected by California’s elitist punk scene, unable to get advertisements in Maximum Rock ‘n Roll, and unable to play the only all ages punk venue around, the legendary Gilman. Frustrated and alienated, the band formed S.P.A.M. Records to release their music, as well as the music of other weirdo rejects from the area such as Dory Tourette and the Skirtheads, Hickey, and the Pilgrims. The band also organized Geekfest, a now legendary event of all ages music festivals that featured live music, foam sword battles, and other geeky activities.
The band recorded two full length records, an EP and a split EP with southern California hardcore band Your Mother, as well as appearing on several compilations.
The band disbanded in 2000, which also signaled the end of S.P.A.M. Records and Geekfest. John went on to focus all of his energy on Fleshies and TRICLOPS!, both signed to Alternative Tentacles and famous for world tours. Dan Abbott went on to play in the zombie jug band the Hobo Gobbelins, as well as performing his own opera, Day of the Zombie.
