Oh, the streets of Rome are filled with rubble
Ancient footprints are everywhere
You can almost think that you're seein' double
On a cold, dark night on the Spanish Stairs

  • The piano version on Bootleg Series 10 is a revelation.
  • The studio version is endearingly sloppy, but this song really comes into its own with 1975's Rolling Thunder Revue. Day after day, night after night, this song is just brilliant! I love the wild tempo shifts from show to show, too.
  • This is my very favorite Dylan song.
  • my favorite part is "newspaper men eating candy... had to be held down by big police"
  • but at any rate, I just plain love this song
  • sounds a bit like Randy Newman on this one..
  • This version is from the Bob Dylan 30th anniversary concert, 1993. Eric Clapton intro?
  • the BAND not Bob Dylan
  • Wonderful song.
  • Botticelli's niece!
