I think we better talk this over
Maybe when we both get sober
You'll understand, I'm only a man
Doin' the best that I can

  • Which itself goes two ways... maybe he's the one who thinks he's being left alone, that she's going to find a home somewhere far away from him... OR, *he's* telling *her* off. Saying, well, there's a home for ya somewhere, but fuck off now 'cause it ain't here with me! Dammit Dylan... you wily songwriter you...
  • Five shouts below I noted the sweetness of the "somewheres in..." line, or at least the sweetness of its presence in this kind of song. But, two years of life experience later, I've caught rather the underlying bitterness, since by saying what he's saying the narrator implies that it's not with HIM that she can make or find her home anymore, and that hurts.
  • "I’m exiled, you can’t convert me; I’m lost in the haze of your delicate ways with both eyes glazed." - Story of my life, basically... :P
  • you don't have to be afraid of looking into my face
  • Aye, and rightly so, considering how satisfying his interpretations are!
  • Somewheres* in this universe ;) Christopher Ricks was crazy about these lingual things in his book.
  • "Somewhere in this universe there's a place that you can call home"—isn't that a marvelous line to include in a breakup anthem?
  • Time for a new transition, I wish I was a magician - I would wave a wand and tie back the bond that we’ve both gone beyond.
  • Bob sings this in such a defeated tone... it works perfectly!
  • I love this song too. The lyrics are so true, people really should talk things over a lot more.
