“Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again” is a song by Bob Dylan that appears on his 1966 album Blonde on Blonde. The album version also appears on 1971’s Bob Dylan’s Greatest Hits Vol. II. Another version of the song appears on the 1976 live album Hard Rain. An early studio take, done in a faster cut-time, was released on The Bootleg Series Vol. 7: No Direction Home: The Soundtrack; as the recording indicates, Dylan had difficulty fitting the words to the tempo, and evidently this led to its rearrangement, as heard on the official album, in a more “rock” oriented 4/4 time.[1]

The song also inspired the name of the Memphis Group, a 1980s design movement, with its title.

Oh, the ragman draws circles
Up and down the block
I'd ask him what the matter was
But I know that he don't talk

A seminar in how to write an incredibly long song and still keep people listening with the power of the words alone.

I said, "Oh! Come on now. You know you know about my debutante." She said, "Your debutante just knows what you need, but I know what you want."

I'm not a huge fan of Blonde on Blonde, but this song is terrific! The lyrics are strange, of course, but I think there's a more intelligent & playful (or intelligently playful) sensibility at work here than on a lot of the electric era surrealism. And lest it go unmentioned, the early outtake is at least as good as the released version! Then there's Hard Rain... can't go wrong with this number, basically.

this is not random. I think there is a thought behind every word here but it's too obscured for us.

Objectively speaking the language is just excessive and random. But his voice somehow makes it work and the band carries the tune beautifully.

What can I usefully say about this song? Just exquisite, like most of his songs. But why do so few people listen to the Heretics album, the one with Jokerman and Neighbourhood Bully, which I've never heard on Last?

I like to listen to the version on bootleg #7, it's like being with Bob Dylan in the studio listening to him creating a song.
