About this album

Tempest is the thirty-fifth studio album by American singer-songwriter Bob Dylan, released on September 10, 2012 by Columbia Records. The album was recorded at Jackson Browne’s Groove Masters Studios in Santa Monica, California. Dylan wrote all of the songs himself with the exception of the track “Duquesne Whistle”, which he co-wrote with Robert Hunter.

Tempest was very well received by contemporary music critics, who praised its traditional music influences and Dylan’s dark lyrics. The album peaked at number three on the Billboard 200.
Composition.

Rolling Stone reported that the fourteen-minute long title track “Tempest” is about the RMS Titanic and includes references to the James Cameron film Titanic (1997).
The song “Roll on John” is a tribute to John Lennon. It includes references to some of his songs, including The Beatles’ “Come Together” and “A Day in the Life.”
The album’s title initially spurred rumors that it would be Dylan’s final album, based on its similarity to the title of Shakespeare’s final play. Dylan later responded: “Shakespeare’s last play was called The Tempest. It wasn’t called just plain “Tempest”. The name of my record is just plain Tempest. It’s two different titles.”

I like to listen to this album from back to front. I must say Dylan surprised me with this one

Michael Gira of the incomparable Swans: "Personally, I’m a little disappointed in his voice but what can I say? He’s 70 something. I think lyrically, though, it’s phenomenal. It is so beautiful. It’s romantic and suffused with a kind of morality and the meaning of death. You know it also has this overarching, sweeping poetic vision of life. I think it’s incredible. It makes you cry. It’s about how temporal we are ultimately. It’s this whole list of experience and it’s all pointing to that…"

I still find Early Roman Kings / Tin Angel a little boring, but overall I have no problem calling this the best thing he's done since the '80s.

I must say Bob really surprised me with this one. I had my doubts, but it turned out to be a rocking cool album with a melodic sound and those violent brooding lyrics to go with it. Would never have thought he'd release what is arguably his darkest record at such a high age.

The "T" on the cover is intended to be a cross.

The Tempest was Shakespeare's final play. Let's hope this isn't Dylan's last record.

Don't know what do you receive. But instead of the song "Tempest" I can listen only "Roll On John". And then again "Roll On John".

Read this in some newspaper: "If this is to be His Bobness's final record (which we don't hope), it's a damn worthy one.". Couldn't agree more.
