About this album
Saved was Dylan’s second album to follow his conversion to born-again Christianity, explored on the album’s predecessor (1979’s well-received Slow Train Coming). Every song on the album is about strong personal faith and features heavy gospel influences; unlike the previous record, many critics dismissed Saved for its dogmatic songs and bombastic arrangements. While it still made a healthy #3 in the UK, it only managed #24 during a brief chart stay in the US and never went gold.
CCM Magazine described the album as an “open declaration of Dylan’s deepening faith.”[1]

Exactly! It always comes at me at the time I expect it least! Your factoid about the sunshine made me laugh out loud... call it bitter laughter... that really isn't much! Glad you're getting some sun again, Ralf. I'm an unrepentant lover of cloudy days, but I think three months of what amounts to no sunshine would get even me depressed.

I read somewhere recently that from December to late February we only got like a total of 15 hours of sunshine. Not only does it have a somewhat depressing effect, it just makes you feel drowsy and kinda weak. I don't get noise distractions because I use the in-ear earplugs, but then again, I don't live in NYC. I know how noisy it can get there! That city never sleeps, it's a roaring beast...

And hey, well, Estonia's pretty far north... I'm kinda jealous, though, I LOVE snow. At least here in NYC we've already had two weeks of springtime, with another coming up! So say the forecasts. It's nice 'cause usually it goes from winter to spring in, like, three days, which sucks, especially compared to Poland's long luxuriant springs. At least such as I remember from my childhood; maybe it's changed since then... hm. Well anyway, I'm a-hangin' ON! To a solid ROCK! MADE! BEFORE! THE FOUNDATION! OF! The wooooorrrrld...

Hahaha, that's great about Precious Angel. I tried taking Saved for walks but realized I prefer to listen to it where there are no distractions from outside-noise and where I can focus on every little sound the band makes and every inflection of Bob's voice. It's such a warm & rich recording!

Usually when I listen to Precious Angel I like to switch the lights on and off at the "Shine your light" parts. I mostly put on Saved when I'm taking walks outside, although now that the snow has FINALLY melted (mid-April... jeez!) I enjoy Paul Simon's whimsical hits. :p

Well okay, maybe not *quite* my favorite (I have a tendency to speak too soon) but it's still way way up there! It's a massive record, even if Covenant Woman and Pressing On are shorn of some of their best melodies (though both have other virtues, and considerable ones at that), and even if this studio cut of Solid Rock is a little shaky on its legs.

It lacks the high points of Slow Train Coming, but I think it is the most consistent of the Christian albums. The gospel influence gives it something different. It's better than Shot of Love, in my opinion, which is just bland and uninspired.

This album was panned by the critics when it was released, and was a commercial flop, and yet, I think, is one of his finest. I don't think he has ever sounded as passionate about his music and his message as he does on this album. Forget the religious message if you must, but listen to the music. That first burst of harmonica on "What Can I do For You?" always leaves me gasping, and "Covenant Woman" is yet another of those exquisite love songs he regularly produces that are so often overlooked. (Will Sony ever release "Bob Dylan : Love Songs"?)
