Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 (4:35)

Cover of Bob Dylan: The Collection

From Bob Dylan: The Collection and 137 other releases

The opening track of Dylan’s album Blonde on Blonde. It is reported that Dylan got his musicians drunk for the recording, claiming they were too stiff. (Which would explain all the hooting and hollering)

According to Howard Sounes’ book Down the Highway: The Life of Bob Dylan, Dylan refused to play the song “straight,” meaning sober, and large milkshake cartons of “Leprechaun Cocktails” (normally served in shot glasses) were brought in for the band to consume. Dylan did not touch the alcohol but was high on cannabis, having passed joints around before the recording. [1]

Dylan said this is about the Book of Acts, not drugs. This doesn't mean he hasn't touched drugs, not even nearly. But it surely does leave you wondering.

What I love about this song is how it must have come across to people buying "Blonde on Blonde" when it first came out. They see the name of the song and think "Oh, another thoughtful Dylan ballad to start the album off!" and then get hit with the circus that is this song.

420 didn't exist till the 70's. So no. Still a drug song undoubtedly though.
