Oh, the gentlemen are talking and the midnight moon is on the riverside
They're drinking up and walking and it is time for me to slide
I live in another world where life and death are memorized
Where the earth is strung with lover's pearls and all I see are dark eyes.

Am I missing something, or is this a cover versión? Like, not Bob Dylan...

Wonky, Ralf? I like your choice of word, but I think these lyrics are downright marvelous! I'd even venture to call Dark Eyes one of Bob's most magical and heartfelt songs.

They tell me to be discreet for all intended purposes, they tell me revenge is sweet and from where they stand, I’m sure it is. But I feel nothing for their game where beauty goes unrecognized, all I feel is heat and flame and all I see are dark eyes.

Beautiful, easily my favorite from "Empire Burlesque".

There are some good songs on "Empire Burlesque," but the general overproduction hurts. This song is, of course, free of that curse. I don't think the lyrics are wonky at all.

    Sounds like his pre-67 work.

A very nice to end such an over-produced, almost grotesque (yet captivating) album. I've really become to love this song, although Dylan's writing here is kind of .. wonky.

I love the way it's at the end of the album - enough of that stuff, here's the real deal.

This sounds like the intro to "Redemption Song" by Bob Marley.

'Empire Burlesque' needs to be remastered, seriously. Actually it is a pretty good album with an awesome end but the production is just horrible.

Great song. Also, Iron & Wine's cover of it is absolutely brilliant.
