"the first section of their most highly referenced work is also one of the most impenetrable and potentially off putting to new fans" It's true. You really can't listen to this album with any background noise i.e. on a bus, walking in a mall, as you'll likely miss out on the little intricate workings of each track and their samples. When I first listened to it (in my formerly noisy work environment), I thought it was just an average piece of ambient techno that's occasionally rather dull. You need to listen to it in a quiet space i.e. bedroom, from start to finish, and just let the dreamy nostalgic atmosphere wash over you. Afterwards, you'll likely "get" why this album is excellent (at least that's how it worked for me).

My only complaint for Music Has The Right is that the first half of the record is much more minimal and repetitive than the second, and can be a headache if you're not in the right mood. It's honestly a little frustrating that Boards of Canada have such a wide, extremely rewarding breadth of music in their discography, and yet the first section of their most highly referenced work is also one of the most impenetrable and potentially off putting to new fans.
