New York City (1990 – present)

The Blues Explosion is an American band formed in 1990 in New York City. After the demise of Spencer’s D.C. band Pussy Galore, he teamed up with guitarist Judah Bauer and drummer Russell Simins to form The Jon Spencer Blues Explosion (sometimes abbreviated to JSBX). They were known by this name until 2004, which Spencer changed because “It’s always been a band, never a solo project,” saying “the name change honors a band.”

Their sound is a diverse and raw combination of punk rock, blues, noise, rock & roll, soul, funk, urban, and rockabilly, with an occasional theremin solo. Members played in bands such as NYC’s The Honeymoon Killers and Boss Hog prior to the formation of the Blues Explosion.

    Anyways, Damage is criminally underrated. With production from The Automator, DJ Shadow, and David Holmes and with features from Chuck D and Martina Topley-Bird. The album is flawless. Pay no attention to ignorant reviews from internet nerds.

    It'd still be like merging "Jefferson Airplane" and "Jefferson Starship". / They "are NOW known as Blues Explosion", they weren't before. All I'm saying is that IMO you should put in the artist field whatever's written on the CD, since a band changing their name doesn't change what's written on their older stuff.

    The band changed their name from "Jon Spencer's Blues Explosion" to "Blues Explosion"... so why merge anything. It's a name change ffs. It'd be like merging "Jefferson Airplane" and "Jefferson Starship". So chill the fuck out already.

    The Stooges and Iggy & the Stooges – different personnel in each band but merged by Last.fm. Blues Explosion and Jon Spencer Blues Explosion – same personnel in each band but not merged. Eh?

    i don't think they should merge, if the band itself made it clear it was a change of name. it's not like it's one of those with or without the THE or something similiar. The 'Before 2004 known as ...." in the band description is enough for me.
